I’m all for trying to complete the game blind, but I have a limited amount of free time so you can bet your ass that I’m going to look up *some* NPC quest guides or tips in a FromSoft game. There is way too much missable content for a game of this length.

There is no “being stumped on a quest then figuring it out” being stumped implies you are missing something, when Alexander says he’s “going to caelid” you know he’ll be there somewhere, just literally anywhere in an area larger than most of ds1. So you have to decid, do I waste possibly hours of my life to find this one guy? Or do I just look it up. This quest design worked in the linear smaller games, but it does not work in this game at all.

For me, this is actually a huge rift between Dark Souls and Elden Ring. I went into Dark Souls 1 and 3 blind and I finished 1 blind and 3 almost blind. But with Elden Ring... I went in blind on my first playthrough, got completely lost without a clue what to do, and then quit after about 26 game hours of aimless wandering. It's only after I started using guides that I began having fun with the game. I personally think the Dark Souls formula and open worlds don't mesh as well as people think, and Elden Ring isn't always perfect in making these two aspects sync up. I'm sure it won't be the last of its kind though, and for what it's worth, it's still a great game. I do think open world Soulslikes have a place alongside traditional Soulslikes, but I really hope they won't replace them. From what I've seen in recent years, it doesn't seem like they won't though, so I'm not too worried.

Read some wiki stuff on my first playthrough, and ended up regretting it. If I hadn't read it, I would've missed stuff like Haligtree, Fias quest, Rannis quest, Sellen, Moonveil, giants flame incantations (my favorite) and the whole Millicent quest line. But if I hadn't looked them up, I would have had more moments like organically discovering Sioffra river and I wouldn't have felt that going into NG+ would be pointless.

I started with MHFU and skipped all games until World, I think it's great to have two "sub-franchises": The World/Wilds more realistic approach, and the GU/Rise more fantasy approach. I'm fine with them alternating those between releases

I do honestly think it's a close to impossible for the majority of people to finish certain npc quests or other things without guides. Like it is possible? Yes, if you're diligently taking notes of all dialogue you hear. I mean there are plenty of cases where the next step of an npc's quest is only hinted at by one specific and very vague line of dialogue. You'd only be able to remember that if you literally write it down and try to permanently keep it in mind.

When it comes to npc questlines, there is stuff that u cant figure out if the game fucks u over for no reason. On my first run, i lost millicent because i explored Altus before even starting her quest, so i never met her at the first grace. The npc quests design is obtuse and should be improved for sure.

I don’t think it’s just you, the whole internet would flip the proverbial table if Sony did something like that. However the people greenlighting games at big companies seem to be constantly moving further and further out of touch from the pulse of what gamers want, so I don’t entirely put such an idiotic decision in the realm of impossibility. Our eyes are yet to open.

After 40 hours in MHW I'm just tired of it. Way too clunky, the weapons are for the most part are way too complicated and I really don't understand why you have to go outside of the game to get good information about it each weapon, and the monster fights way overstay their welcome after 7-8min of fighting. And on top of that I feel like if you've fought one monster with a similar skeleton to another you've already fought both monsters and each monster behaves the same exact way and I feel so cheated when I suddenly get one-shot then the monster leaves the area after fighting for a good 10+ min. Monster hunter is for players who really don't have anything to do all day every day. Lots of potential, but it needs a lot of polishing.

I'm still finishing my first playthrough of Elden Ring, and I did much of it blind. However, there are tons of things (quests) that are so opaque, that I've never experienced them because I had no idea where to go or even that it was a quest to pursue. And my experience of the game hasn't been enhanced by missing out on the timing of Rya and Boggart's quests. Or as I have just gotten to the Grace outside Malenia's battle, presumably Millicent's quest. Were it not for a guide, I would never have finished Ranni's quest because I didn't realize there were dialogue options at a certain Grace. I'm not the kind of person that will invest the sheer time in doing multiple playthroughs of Elden Ring, after two years I'm still working through my first. And so, at this point, I earnestly regret not using some sort of guide (or quest tracker) to at least point me directions to complete quests (a reminder to talk to an NPC that might be in the area or something), because now there are quests and stories I'm not going to experience through play--I can only read the guide to imagine what it would have been like to play it. So, I appreciate the sentiments of going in blind, or that Miyazaki feels there is room for improvement, but none of that has value to me after its already too late.

Uhhh no…. Some of the quests are so ridiculous you have to look it up without accidentally discovering it on your own after 2,000 hours. Your idiotic comment of “the guide makers had to complete it and do it without any help”. Is beyond dumb. And a complete lie. I know you need to lie because of the your precious from software. But no. The guide makers did not discover it on their own at ALL that is a complete lie. Most of the quests are a community driven experience. Someone finds their findings and posts it. Then they try to see what’s next after that. Then someone else finds something and posts that. When the quest is complete then people start to make guide videos for people who want to complete the entire quest. That doesn’t mean some quests are unable to be completed. It means some of them are so ridiculous that there is no way they expect a player to complete it without guides. And prob around 80% of the quests in the game you are unaware of them when you progress the game.

I dont subscribe much to the idea that if you see spoilers it ruins a good game/movie/etc. If the movie gets spoiled because you knew the plot twist than the movie is trash and is only watchable for shocking factor of the plot twist. Same for a game. If it is only enjoyable if you get surprised, than its trash. Its not well done. You should always be able to enjoy and admire not only what is being said but also how it is being said and presented, and that is independent of if you know or dont know about what is coming.

I think there also something to say about how using a guide can you miss out on the experience of missing something itself. There are many cases where missing a particular item or npc will completely alter your experience. A big exemple would be all those people who didn't happen to find mimic tear and couldn't rely on it to get them through the harder fights. There also a certain excitement in seeing someone find something you didn't and find out at the same time as them.

I didn't need a guide for _any_ of the questlines on my first playthrough, I just spent 200 hours exploring every inch of the map and most of the time they would end up completing themselves. For the rest you just gotta use your brain a little, like figuring out where an NPC's next location will be -- if you pay attention they'll give you a general idea of which way they're headed and you just follow that path, like Corhyn, Hyetta, etc. Now don't get me wrong, I still checked a bunch of resources after finishing to see what I missed and it ended up being quite a few things, but this would usually be because I just made one choice over another and was then locked out of the other one. Like getting the Dung Eater puppet for example -- definitely needed a guide for that one, and I'd argue getting the Dung Eater puppet is THE most obtuse thing in the entire game. Then there are things like the secret Patches gesture(s), and I believe I missed a couple of painting locations, some well-hidden gear, a bunch of rare drops, and stuff like that. But the NPC questlines were no problem to complete once they got triggered (Sellen's was a bit frustrating but it worked out in the end), even if I didn't always get the optimal outcome (like with Rya), they'd still get done. If you're getting stuck it's probably your playstyle that's getting in the way of your awareness that's the problem. So often people just aren't thorough enough with their exploration or don't notice what's around them because they're too fixated on getting that dopamine hit from getting to the next objective, beating the next boss, or whatever. Just like, practice mindfulness or something lol. The questlines in Dark Souls 3 were far more obtuse imo. Elden Ring went easy on us.
